Station 17 celebrates their 20th Anniversary! After 6 studio albums, numerous 12" releases, and the birth of their own label 17rec., they now release their new work „Goldstein Variationen" as a special birthday edition.
Like 17rec, Station 17 is part of barner 16 (alsterarbeit GmbH). This is an artistic network of projects, initiated and led by Kai Boysen, in which able bodied and disabled people work together in music, film, dance and art. This constantly evolving, bubbly pool of ideas is also responsible for the project „Goldstein Variationen":
This project is a cooperation between artists of different genres. A collaborative process in the studio resulted in capturing moments, and taking photos of sounds. Together, the collaborative was working on songs which led to radical reformulations of each individual's sound aesthetics. Each session never took more than a day, and instruments within the band were distributed ad hoc. The project was fortunate to draw an exciting crowd of well-known musicians, including Fettes Brot, Guildo Horn, Krautrock Icon Michael Rother (Neu!), Stereo Total, The Robocop Kraus, Ted Gaier (Die Goldenen Zitronen), Melissa Logan (Chicks On Speed), Schneider TM, Von Spar, Barbara Morgenstern, Knarf Rellöm und Kalabrese.
You might think that this host of bands suggests an eclectic and innovative mix of musical styles - and you wouldn't be wrong!
Station 17 cosmos has cleverly united songs that are as diverse as the catchy hiphop shuffle by Fettes Brot in which Birgit Hohnen thinks about the creation of the rainbow and Stereo Total's punky electro-pop – an homage by singer Jessica Basteck to her hero Bill.
The Krautrock inspired instrumental of Michael Rother is infused with avant-garde retro electronics by Ted Gaier and Melissa Logan. Für Heut Nacht - the alternative one night stand story by Hoss Becker transforms in the capable hands of Robocop Klaus into a very danceable electro pop piece, followed by the hypnotic, oriental space groove with Schneider TM. The last surprise song on the album is the almost euro-trashy pop rock hymn by Guildo Horn & seinen Orthopaedischen Struempfen.
As is usually the case with Station 17, the interesting and unique lyrics demand close attention. What other artist is worried about stock market shares hitting rock bottom; or complains about having to always do the washing up (Lass Das Mal Den Felix Machen)? The album provides a fantastic mix of ironic lyrics, sometimes funny, sometimes acerbic, but always far removed from the usual pop clichés.
The release of this album has been preceded by a total of five 12" releases, which contain two songs each of the cooperative plus remixes (Mense Reents, Thomas Fehlmann, Sid LeRock, Cab Drivers, Kptmichigan, Erobique,. Tobias Thomas & Ada, MyMy, Justus Köhncke, Christopher Just).
The hand painted front covers of each 12" have been developed in cooperation with the Frankfurt-based Atelier Goldstein. In addition to this fusion of music and fine art 25 unique vinyl cover art works were created, which have been shown in various exhibitions.
On the visual front 5 music videos in total were developed: 2 in the usual style by the barner 16 film collective „von der Rolle" (a word play on off the roll, i.e. film roll, but in German also meaning the equivalent of 'off your trolley'); and as a new contribution 3 animated videos featuring drawings and paintings of disabled people.
The entire „Goldstein Variationen" project was filmed in the studio and on stage, and will be available as a DVD documentary (90 min.) from February 09.
